Brief History
The first Engineering College “Government Engineering College” was started by the Mysore Government in 1917 at Bangalore, later in 1965; the college was renamed after its founder as “University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering”. Three more collages were started in 1946. By the time of Integration of the State, there were totally five engineering colleges (two under Government and three in private sector) in the State.
By 1993-94 there were a total of 47 Engineering Colleges in the State of which four were Government institutions, nine were aided and the rest unaided. By 2008-09 Karnataka had 145engineering colleges, which went to 187 in 2010-11.
The large number of professional institutions in Karnataka attracts students not only from the other parts of India but also from foreign countries.
Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA)
KEA, earlier known as CET, at State level is conducted for admission to Engineering Colleges. Admission to Govt/University managed Engineering Colleges and Regional Engineering Colleges (Karnataka Quota) is completely regulated through CET. Specified number of seats as notified from time to time in private/aided, unaided Engineering Colleges are left to be filled at the discretion of the college management.
Allocation of Seats: 95% for candidates passing PUC exam from Karnataka and 5% for candidates passing Diploma exam of the State Board of Technical Education.
Reservation: Govt of India nominates 25 seats, Students sponsored by Tamil Nadu/Kerala Govt on reciprocal basis 5/3 seats, NCC cadets having ‘B’ certificate 35 seats, NCC cadet getting distinction 1 seat, Sportsmen/Women 40 seats ,Scouts/Guides (President’s Award) 5 seats, Physically handicapped 10 seats, Kannadigas outside Karnataka including disputed Kannada speaking areas 32 seats, Students having studied for 10 academic years in the State at places having a population below 20,000, 10% Anglo-Indian community 1 seat. 1.Freedom Fighters 33 seats
2.Defence personnel 35 seats
3.Ex-servicemen 35 seats.
Seats are also reserved for SC/ST and Backward community.
COMEDK
Karnataka Private Medical and Dental Colleges Association and Karnataka Unaided Private Engineering Colleges Association have set up ‘COMEDK’ to conduct a ‘Common Admission Test’ UGET-PGET , that would facilitate determination of merit for admissions to Undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered by Medical, Dental and Engineering Colleges run by its members. The merit list will be used to select and admit candidates through centralised single window counselling for admissions to COMEDK member institutions for the academic year
Seat Sharing
In general institutes: Government CET quota: Management and NRI quota=50:50
In minority institutes: Government CET quota: Management and NRI quota=45:55
Eligibility: Candidates should have passed the qualifying exam within 2 years of the date of application for CET.
Selection: It is based on merit in CET conducted in Physics, Chemistry and Maths. The standard of the test is of qualifying exam (PUC of Karnataka Board).The selection Committee will interview the candidates and prepare a rank list based on performance in the entrance test, attainment etc.
Minimum Qualifications: For admissions to full time courses, candidates must have passed the 2-year Pre-University Exam, recognized as equivalent to the concerned University in Karnataka. The optional subjects being Physics, Chemistry and Maths and English as a language, the candidate should secure 50% (45% for SC/ST/BT. Candidates etc.) aggregate marks of the three optional subjects.

The acceptance rate for Indian students coming to study at 20 Canadian colleges has doubled thanks to a new joint project between Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) and the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC).

The pilot project, called the Canada-in-India Student Partners Program, was launched in April 2009 between Canada’s visa offices in India and 20 participating ACCC member colleges. The goal of the program is to increase the approval rate for study-permit applications to Canada.

The announcement was made by federal MP Tim Uppal, on behalf of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney, and by Paul Brennan, ACCC’s VP for International Partnerships, at Toronto’s Centennial College on Jan. 28. Centennial was chosen as the venue for the announcement because it has been the biggest beneficiary of the federal program to fast-track applications by visa students from India.

Canada is becoming an increasingly popular destination for international students. The total number of international students in Canada has more than doubled since 1998 to 178,000 and their presence provided employment for more than 83,000 Canadians last year. A study commissioned by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada found international students contributed more than $6.5 billion to the Canadian economy in 2008.

During the first nine months of the program, CIC’s visa offices in Indiareceived more than 4,000 applications, of which almost 600 were bound for Centennial. The program has successfully met its objective: the approval rate for the first group of students coming to study this past September was more than double the approval rate for the same colleges the preceding year. Furthermore, 95 percent of the students remain in good standing at their ACCC college. In addition, processing times are faster than the global norm, with an average of about two and a half weeks.

The program has several checks and balances, from requiring applicants to provide verifiable documentation, to a feedback mechanism where colleges report back on whether students show up. The federal government continues to look at ways to encourage international students to study in Canada.
